Comments: Imaged Saturn July 11th targeting a CM transit of the Lat-55 bright spot. Seeing was good so this session was extended and covers 2 hrs 59 min’s of Saturn rotation. Have good depth of small scale detail resolved particularly in 685nm IR and the R channel data. Detail resolved by latitude; Bright oval approx Lat+37.1 L3 161 (R data) Bright spot approx Lat+30.3 L3 156.8 (IR data) Bright compact spot on edge of ring shadow approx Lat-18.8 L3 149.2 (IR data) Bright spot mid SEB approx Lat-30.6 L3 133.7 (R data) Diffuse bright spot approx Lat-50.4 L3 123 (IR data) Bright spot approx Lat-51.2 L3 136.5 (IR and R data) Long lived bright spot approx Lat-55.1 L3 167.3 (IR data) I now have 7 data points for the Lat-55 bright spot including 1 from Fabio’s data over 99 days and the drift is approx –3.215 degrees / d. Of particular note; due to the extent of this session both the 685nm IR and R channel animations very nicely demonstrate the differential rotation within Saturn’s atmosphere. The 685nm IR animation covers 2 hrs 49 min’s of Saturn rotation with the Lat-18.8 compact bright spot seen overtaking the far south bright spots. The R channel animation covers 2 hrs 20 min’s of Saturn rotation and here the Lat-30.6 bright spot is overtaking the Lat-51 bright spot.
